How to Clean a Weight Bench: A Vinyl Care Routine for Home and Commercial Gyms

Quick answer

To clean a weight bench, wipe the vinyl pad top and sides after every use with a pre-moistened cleaning wipe (or a soft cloth and a mild cleaner your bench maker allows), wipe the frame where hands touch it, and let the pad air dry. Never soak the padding, and don't let cleaner dry into a film or pool in the seams. Once a week, check seams and edges for cracks, which are much harder to keep clean.

Why pads crack

What wears out weight bench vinyl?

Upholstery cracks and peels for predictable reasons. Equipment maker Skelcore lists sweat and moisture cycles, harsh cleaners and over-cleaning, heat and UV exposure, and high-friction contact points among the main causes (Skelcore upholstery guide). Vinyl maker Wolf-Gordon warns that leaving spills on upholstery for an extended time can cause lasting marks and cracks, and advises against over-wetting during spot cleaning (Wolf-Gordon vinyl care guide, PDF).

In practice, four habits keep pads in better shape:

Wiping the vinyl pad of a weight bench with a Wipex fitness wipe
Biggest habit

Remove sweat and body oil soon after each use

Instead of letting them sit on the vinyl between sessions.

Use the least liquid

Use a pre-moistened wipe or a damp cloth instead of spraying a pad until it drips.

Avoid residue

If a cleaner leaves a film, follow it with a clean damp cloth.

Placement

Keep benches out of direct sun

And away from heaters where you can.

Mistakes to skip

What not to use on a weight bench

Do

  • Use a pre-moistened cleaning wipe or a damp soft cloth
  • Use cleaners your bench maker allows
  • Wipe the frame grips, pins and rollers too
  • Let the pad air dry

Don't

  • Use abrasive pads or stiff brushes on the vinyl surface
  • Use cleaners your bench or upholstery maker prohibits. Some vinyl makers allow diluted isopropyl alcohol or bleach only for specific stains, not for routine cleaning
  • Soak the pad. Liquid that reaches the foam and the staple line is hard to get back out
  • Let any product dry into a film on the surface

Routine cleaning vs. EPA-registered products on a weight bench

Routine cleaning

Removes sweat, body oil and visible soil from the bench. This is the everyday job between users.

EPA-registered products

A separate step with a product registered with the EPA. Apply it exactly as its label directs, only on surfaces its label lists.

The CDC tells facilities to "always read the label on disinfecting products to make sure the products can be used on the type of surface you are disinfecting" and to keep the surface wet for the full contact time listed in the directions (CDC facility cleaning guidance). The EPA's six steps for disinfectant use follow the same order: confirm the product is EPA-registered, follow the label directions, pre-clean the surface, and keep it wet for the full contact time (EPA, PDF).

How to choose a wipe for weight bench vinyl

For everyday cleaning between users, look for three things: evidence that the formula was tested on vinyl, a sheet large enough to cover a full bench pad, and a format that fits where the bench lives.

Wipex fitness wipes (Fresh Lavender and Lemongrass & Eucalyptus) were made for this job:

  1. Independent lab testing

In independent lab testing by TURI at UMass Lowell, Wipex fitness wipes outperformed traditional quat-based disinfecting wipes at removing body oil from vinyl, rubber, coated yoga mats and stainless steel.

  2. Material compatibility

Lab-verified for material compatibility with vinyl, rubber and coated yoga mats.

  3. 21-day soak tests

Zero damage to delicate equipment such as vinyl upholstery, rubber flooring and coated yoga mats in 21-day lab soak tests.

They cut through sweat, body oil and grime on benches, mats and machines, and they are great for use on vinyl upholstery, rubber flooring and stainless steel. If in doubt, test on a small, inconspicuous area first.

  1. Within a few steps of every bench cluster

A station across the room is easy to skip.

  2. Next to a waste bin

The Wipex matte floor dispenser is a free-standing stainless steel station with a waste basket built in.

  3. On a wall where floor space is tight

When to repair or replace bench upholstery

Replace or recover a pad when the vinyl is cracked, the seams have split or the foam is exposed. Torn upholstery can't be wiped clean properly, and moisture gets into the foam. Small surface scuffs can be monitored, but schedule repairs before cracks spread across the seating area.

What do you see on the pad? Select all that apply.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to clean a weight bench?

Wipe the vinyl pad and frame contact points after every use with a pre-moistened cleaning wipe or a soft cloth and a cleaner your bench maker allows, then let it air dry. Avoid soaking the pad and avoid abrasive tools.

Can you use EPA-registered wipes on a weight bench?

Yes, if the product is EPA-registered, its label lists the surface, and you follow the label directions, including contact time. Check your bench maker's care guide too. Disinfecting is a separate step from routine cleaning.

Can I use alcohol wipes on a vinyl weight bench?

Check your upholstery maker's care guide first. Some vinyl makers mention diluted isopropyl alcohol only as a stain treatment, not as a routine cleaner.

How often should a weight bench be cleaned?

Wipe it after every user. In a commercial gym, also inspect seams and edges weekly and give the frame a full wipe-down on a set schedule.

Are Wipex fitness wipes EPA-registered?

No. Wipex fitness wipes are cleaning wipes, not disinfectants. They remove sweat, body oil and grime. When you need an EPA-registered product, use one exactly as its label directs.

Will Wipex refill rolls fit my dispenser?

Every Wipex bulk roll from 350 to 2,000 ct fits both steel dispensers and the XL buckets. The Wipex floor and wall-mounted dispensers also fit the EMBODY® Body Wipes 225ct refill and bucket, which are for skin. For another brand's dispenser, check the compatibility diagram on the 700ct roll page or contact the Wipex team.
