What is Cyclosporiasis?
How infection happens
People become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with feces carrying the parasite. It generally isn't spread person-to-person, because shed oocysts need one to two weeks in the environment to mature before they can infect someone else.
Who it affects
Anyone can be infected, regardless of age. People with weakened immune systems may experience more prolonged or severe symptoms.
Incubation & duration
Symptoms typically begin about a week after exposure (a range of 2–14 days). Without treatment, illness can last anywhere from a few days to a month or longer, and can relapse after seeming to improve.
Symptoms
The most common symptom is watery, sometimes frequent or "explosive," diarrhea. Loss of appetite, weight loss, bloating, gas, cramping, nausea, and fatigue are also common; low-grade fever and vomiting are less common.
Treatment
The standard treatment is a course of the oral antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX). Many people with healthy immune systems eventually recover without treatment, though illness can persist much longer untreated.

Anyone with watery diarrhea lasting more than a few days, or signs of dehydration, should contact a healthcare provider — Cyclospora testing requires specific lab methods a doctor has to request by name.
